Made in the USA Since 2003: Why We Still Do It the Hard Way

Every so often someone asks us why we still make our compression socks in the United States. It would be cheaper to do it another way. The honest answer is that we’ve been doing it the hard way since 2003, and we’ve never found a good reason to stop.

Made here, not just designed here

There’s a difference between a sock that’s “designed” somewhere and one that’s actually made somewhere. SmoothToe socks are knit in the USA, to our own standards, on machines run by people who know what a good sock is supposed to feel like. When you own the process end to end, you control the quality — the yarns that go in, the way the toe is finished, the way the compression holds up after the fiftieth wash.

The SmoothToe knit

The whole company started with a simple idea: a toe seam shouldn’t rub. We built a knit with a smooth toe that runs clean against your foot, with no bulky ridge to bother you over a long day. It’s the kind of detail you feel in the first hour and still feel in the twelfth. Getting it right took more than 25 prototypes back in 2003 — and it’s still the heart of what we make.

Why it still matters

Making our socks here means we can stand behind them. It supports skilled work in this country. And it lets us back every pair with a 5-year warranty — something you won’t often find on a sock, and something we couldn’t offer if we didn’t control how they’re built.

We’re not the biggest compression sock company in America, and we’re okay with that. We’d rather make a sock we’re proud to put our name on.
