How to Put On Compression Socks the Easy Way

If you've ever wrestled with a pair of compression socks and nearly given up, you're not alone. They're supposed to be snug — that firmness is what makes them work — but that same snugness can make them tricky to get on, especially the first few times. The good news: with the right technique, it takes seconds, not a workout.

Here's the easy way.

The step-by-step method

  1. Reach inside and grab the heel. Put your hand into the sock and pinch the heel, then pull the foot section back through so the sock is turned inside-out down to the heel. This bunches the leg portion so you're not fighting the whole sock at once.
  2. Slip your foot in. Position the sock over your toes and foot, lining up the heel of the sock with your heel.
  3. Roll, don't yank. Gently unroll the leg portion up your ankle and calf, a little at a time. Let it unfold rather than pulling hard from the top.
  4. Smooth it out. Run your hands up the sock to remove wrinkles and make sure it lies flat. No bunching, no folds — those create pressure points.

Tricks that make it even easier

  • Do it first thing in the morning. Legs and feet are at their least swollen right after you wake up, so the socks go on easiest before you're up and about.
  • Start with dry skin and dry socks. Damp skin grabs the fabric. If you use lotion, let it fully absorb first.
  • Wear rubber dish gloves. This is the pro trick — the grip lets you grab and glide the fabric without your fingers slipping, and it keeps fingernails from snagging the knit.
  • Consider a donning aid. For anyone with limited mobility, back issues, or arthritis, a simple sock-slider tool makes it effortless.

Taking them off

Peel from the top and roll them down and off, turning them inside-out as you go — the same idea in reverse. Avoid yanking from the toe.

A couple of things to avoid

  • Don't fold or roll the top down to shorten them — that doubles the fabric and creates a tight band that pinches.
  • Don't force a size that's too small. If they're a real struggle every single time, the size may be off. Our sizing guide takes a minute and saves a lot of hassle.
